Lead Teacher (Toddlers)

Reports To: Center Director / Assistant Director

Position Summary:
The Lead Toddler Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a nurturing, developmentally appropriate, and engaging classroom environment for toddlers (ages 16 months to 3 years). This role involves planning and implementing curriculum, promoting positive behavior, and fostering emotional, social, and physical growth. The Lead Teacher serves as a role model and team leader, ensuring that all licensing standards and center policies are met.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum & Classroom Management

  • Plan and implement age-appropriate, child-centered curriculum that promotes learning through play and exploration.

  • Support toddlers in achieving key developmental milestones, including language development, self-help skills, and social interaction.

  • Set up and maintain a safe, clean, organized, and stimulating classroom environment.

  • Use observation and assessment tools to track each child's development and tailor activities to meet individual needs.

Caregiving & Supervision

  • Provide consistent supervision and responsive care to toddlers during meals, toileting/diapering, rest, and play.

  • Support children in developing independence, problem-solving, and emotional regulation skills.

  • Maintain accurate daily records for each child, including incident reports, attendance, meals, and rest times.

Family Engagement

  • Build strong, respectful relationships with parents and guardians through daily communication, conferences, and written updates.

  • Partner with families to understand and support each child’s routines, goals, and cultural background.

  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as a mentor and guide to assistant teachers or aides in the classroom.

  • Foster a positive and cooperative classroom culture among staff.

  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.

  • Support center-wide goals and contribute to a cohesive teaching team.

Health & Safety

  • Adhere to all health, safety, and licensing regulations.

  • Ensure constant supervision and appropriate staff-to-child ratios.

  • Implement hygiene, nutrition, and emergency procedures.

  • Conduct regular classroom inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.

  • Must meet state licensing requirements for lead toddler teachers (including coursework, training hours, and background clearance).

  • CDA credential or equivalent qualification in early childhood development strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 1–2 years experience working with toddlers in a licensed childcare setting.

  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

  • Passion for working with toddlers and supporting their growth in a caring, structured environment.
