Lead Teacher (School-Age)

Reports To: Center Director / Assistant Director

Position Summary:
The Lead School-Age Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and empowering environment for children ages 5–12 during before and after school care and out-of-school time. This position emphasizes outdoor exploration, nature-based learning, and teamwork while supporting each child’s social, emotional, and academic development. The ideal candidate is passionate about encouraging youth, enjoys being outdoors, and thrives in a collaborative team setting.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development & Implementation

  • Design and lead developmentally appropriate activities focused on outdoor learning, nature appreciation, creative expression, and teamwork.

  • Facilitate recreational games, group projects, and nature-based challenges that encourage physical movement, leadership, and cooperation.

  • Support academic learning through homework help, reading time, and hands-on enrichment.

  • Create an inclusive, respectful atmosphere where all children feel seen, safe, and supported.

Environment & Safety

  • Maintain a structured yet flexible environment that promotes exploration, independence, and positive risk-taking.

  • Ensure all safety protocols and licensing regulations are followed during indoor and outdoor activities.

  • Supervise children attentively in various settings, including playgrounds, nature trails, field trips, and classroom spaces.

Youth Engagement & Empowerment

  • Foster leadership, conflict resolution, and self-confidence in children through intentional coaching and group activities.

  • Provide children with choices and a voice in shaping parts of the daily routine or special projects.

  • Support social-emotional development with strategies that build self-awareness, empathy, and peer connection.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with fellow staff, assistants, and leadership to ensure consistency and teamwork across the program.

  • Maintain positive relationships with families, keeping them informed of their child’s progress, achievements, and any concerns.

  • Participate in team meetings, training, and planning sessions to enhance program quality and cohesion.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and individual progress.

  • Assist with snack distribution, transitions, and center cleanliness in accordance with licensing and health requirements.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred.

  • Must meet state licensing requirements for school-age teachers, including training hours and background checks.

  • Previous experience working with school-age children in a licensed program or educational setting.

  • Strong interest in nature, physical activity, and outdoor education.

  • Ability to lead a group with energy, creativity, and patience.

  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Preferred Qualities:

  • Experience leading outdoor programs, sports, or nature clubs.

  • Familiarity with positive behavior support and youth leadership development.

  • Collaborative spirit and commitment to professional growth.

  • Passionate about mentoring and empowering the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and changemakers.
